Dental fillings are one of the most common dental treatments we carry out at our Manchester city centre dentistry. Dental fillings act as as barrier between bacteria and hairline cracks or other damage to your tooth enamel. This aims to prevent infections reaching the soft, vulnerable insides of your teeth, or the pulp.
Adult teeth don’t always last a lifetime and can become damaged or decayed for a range of reasons. Some of these can be out of our control.
At our Manchester dentistry, we see patients who need dental fillings for many reasons. These include accidents or trauma, crowded or impacted teeth, illnesses, gum disease and lifestyle choices, such as smoking and prolonged or excessive sugar consumption.
Types of Dental Fillings
Dental fillings will be recommended by your dentist as a measure to strengthen any vulnerable areas of your teeth that have been or may be susceptible to infection.
At our Manchester dentistry, you can opt for several types of dental fillings.
Composite Resin fillings
Composite resin fillings are a permanent option. They are hardwearing, resist fractures well and are suitable for both back and front teeth. Your dentist can match composite resin fillings closely to the colour of your teeth, therefore achieving an inconspicuous, natural result.
Glass Ionomer Fillings
Glass ionomer fillings are a semi-permanent option for adult teeth or a permanent filling option for deciduous (milk) teeth. Like composite resin, your dentist can match glass ionomer to your tooth colour. This can result in a more natural look than traditional amalgam, or metal, fillings. Placing glass ionomer fillings is straightforward – your dentist will prepare and clean your tooth before injecting the material into your cavity.
