Should I Go for Dental Implants?
Dental implants are an effective and natural-looking way to restore the beauty of your smile after the loss of teeth. If you’re suffering from a lack of confidence and health issues due to missing teeth, or are experiencing discomfort due to dentures, dental implants could be a permanent solution.
Can I Receive Dental Implants?
We can fit implants for most people without any issues. However, every person is different, so your dentist will discuss everything with you before you decide.
How Do We fit Dental Implants?
Typically, dental implants are constructed from titanium, a strong and durable material that, with proper care, can last for decades.
Dental implants consist of three parts. First, there is an internal screw, which your dentist fits into your jawbone. An abutment is then added, connecting the screw to the third part, which is the tooth itself. This is made from a metal base topped with a porcelain implant crown, or all-ceramic implant crown.
A collar, or healing cap, will then be fitted by your dentist for several weeks to allow the site to heal and will eventually be replaced with the abutment. Your dentist will then cement a crown over the top.
The procedure usually takes around eight appointments and up to six months to complete. The entire process includes appointments for:
- An implant consultation
- Impressions for the surgical stent
- Cone beam CT scan
- Implant placement
- Suture removal
- Implant exposure
- The final impression for the customised abutment and crown
- The final fitting of the abutment and crown.
We will then invite you back to our Manchester dentistry for a review appointment to ensure your procedure has been successful. Sometimes, your dentist will need to separate your procedure into more stages. This will depend on whether you need extra bone support, or grafts, in your jaw.
One abutment is capable of supporting several teeth, so you may need just one implant if you are having two or three teeth fitted.
What are the Benefits of Dental Implants?
Dental implants are designed to look natural alongside your other teeth, so it will be impossible to tell that you have teeth missing. They are also easy to clean and look after.
If you wear dentures, implants can be a low-maintenance and more permanent alternative. In terms of health benefits, the presence of the implant, functioning as a natural tooth, usually stimulates bone regeneration. Therefore, your jawline is more likely to retain its strength following the fitting of dental implants.
